Command from Allah
Allah instructs in the Quran, “And recite the Quran with measured recitation (Tarteel)” (Quran 73:4). This verse highlights the importance of reciting the Quran carefully and thoughtfully.
Reflection and Understanding
The Quran states, “Do they not then reflect on the Quran, or are there locks upon their hearts?” (Quran 47:24). Tarteel encourages a slower, more deliberate recitation that facilitates reflection and understanding of the verses.
Enhancement of Recitation
The Holy Prophet’s ﷺ recitation fulfilled the requirements of tarteel. Some people inquired from Sayyidah ‘Umm Salamah ؓ about the Holy Prophet’s ﷺ recitation of Qur’an in night-prayers. She emulated his recitation in which every single letter was clear and distinct. [Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud]. Tarteel enhances the beauty of recitation, making it more melodious, clear, and impactful.
Spiritual Benefits
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stated, “The one who is proficient in the recitation of the Quran will be with the honorable and obedient scribes (angels)” (Sahih Bukhari). Tarteel helps achieve proficiency in recitation, bringing spiritual rewards.
Tarteel is essential for fulfilling the Quranic command of measured recitation, following the Prophet’s (PBUH) example, enhancing the beauty and clarity of the recitation, and maximizing the spiritual and cognitive benefits derived from engaging with the Quran. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stated, “The one who is proficient in the recitation of the Quran will be with the honorable and obedient scribes (angels)” (Sahih Bukhari).
